Grant Roberts is involved in virtually every facet of the fitness industry from continued nutritional research to fitness equipment design.
At seventeen he opened his first fitness center; at nineteen he won the Canadian heavyweight bodybuilding championships.
Since that time Roberts has conducted seminars and exhibitions on a variety of topics including the promotion of healthy living, understanding food content labeling, and the benefits of exercise and nutrition every level from beginner to professional athlete.
Through an unfortunate turn of events, Roberts added rehabilitative therapies to his repertoire. At a time in his career when he was being courted by professional athletic organizations, Roberts was involved in an automobile accident that left him little chance to survive let alone return to professional athletics. The vehicle he was driving flipped end over end. On one of the revolutions, he was ejected through the sunroof and crushed by the car as it rolled over top of him. An impression of his upper body was molded to the windshield as the cars momentum left Roberts battered body behind. Roberts was taken to a hospital with a broken back, broken clavicle, head trauma and every rib broken which subsequently punctured both lungs. Roberts remained on life support and was hospitalized for many months. At the time of his release, the musculature that had ultimately saved his life had been reduced by over 70 pounds.
Initially Roberts could only take a few steps before gasping for breath from the effect of his collapsed lungs. Driven by the task ahead, Roberts commenced his own rehabilitation initially using the pool in his home beginning with the most basic element of water for resistance. It took more than a year to learn to breathe normally. During the next few years, Roberts underwent half a dozen corrective surgeries. This included the removal of one of the ribs that restricted blood flow to his left arm due to a badly damaged clavicle and the discovery that the rotator cuffs of both shoulders were severely torn and in need of repair. Additionally, a new disc was built from a portion of his hip and was installed with a titanium plate in his cervical vertebrate. All of the trauma left him with badly damaged veins from the massive amounts of intravenous medicines, but most significant as it relates to motor skills and mobility, was the considerable nerve damage that consequently led to Robert’s research and experimentation with neurological adaptations of training in conjunction with the typical biomechanical and physiological aspects of exercise. The medical community was not overly supportive - thinking Roberts should just be grateful he is alive rather than considering returning to athletics. Roberts ultimately decided to take on the arduous task of rehabilitation alone, ultimately deciding to isolate himself in beautiful surroundings of Costa Rica that would be his home for the next four years. During this process he taught himself the Spanish language and once again began doing seminars and exhibitions with the United Nations and other sponsors, traveling to schools throughout Central America promoting the importance and understanding of the benefits of nutrition and physical fitness.
To this day Roberts still suffers from many of the effects of this trauma. Ironically, he still competes in strength events and exhibitions, now he flips cars for audiences by lifting them (see the video - slower connections may have to wait for video to begin), not driving them. Roberts admits he doesn’t retain anywhere near the strength he once had. And while he also has some significant scars, this has not stopped him from returning to the bodybuilding stage either. Roberts remains active on virtually every level of the fitness industry. He continues to lobby the government for tax credits for healthy lifestyles and regulating the fitness industry to protect consumers. He continues his research and development of nutritional innovations, improving upon fitness equipment designs, and the building and operating of fitness centers. He strongly advocates the importance of sharing his knowledge and beliefs with his own staff, and to those who attend his seminars and subscribe to his newsletters and other publications.
In the field of personal training, Roberts consults and is an accomplished personal trainer. He is currently working with the Hollywood film industry. Personally recommended by Clint Eastwood, Roberts trained and provided nutritional consultation for Academy Award winning (and as of January 16, 2005 - a Golden Globe winner - see the video - slower connections may have to wait for video to begin) actress Hilary Swank for her recent role as a boxer in the latest Clint Eastwood Film: Million Dollar Baby (2004). Swank gained twenty pounds of solid muscle in just nine weeks for her role where she convincingly plays a prizefighter. Hilary has been nominated for a Golden Globe award for her amazing work in this role. She credits Roberts for her physical success.
In Publications, Roberts has spent a lifetime developing personalized exercise and nutrition programs. He has reviewed and tested most diet and exercise programs known to man, which led to the creation of his latest book The Unified Diet.
